2014 Emmy Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

Hey-O!  It’s that time of year again!  Award season has officially begun with last night’s Emmy presentation.  Sigh.  With back to school and baby’s first birthday and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, well, I was caught off guard, which is the THIRD AWARD SHOW IN A ROW I MISSED. Nothing screams overtired middle aged mom to me more than missing these award shows and red carpet entrances because I just plum am not aware that they are even scheduled.  And to top it off, I don’t even care about missing the actual show.  How’s that for old lady?

But I do still love the fashion.  I love the pomp and circumstance of the red carpet.  I love the hits, and yes, I love the misses, too.  I love the pretty colors, the shiny jewels, the glowing skin.  I love it all.

Looks like the big trends for the Emmy’s were peplums, bright neon-esque color, beachy, loose hair, red lips, and orange being the new black.  Those gals were everywhere and gave the stuffy awards show a bit of prison chic.  And, blessedly, looks like last winter’s plague of hi-lo hemlines has been retired.  Thank your  blueberries for that trend being gone.

Without further delay, I present my middle aged mom commentary of the 2014 Emmy Award show!

Happy Birthday, Audrey

Style icon, humanitarian, Google doodle cover girl.  Today marks Audrey Hepburn’s would be 85th birthday.

Audrey joy

If you peruse my Pinterest boards, it wouldn’t take long to see that I have a love for all things mid-century.  Audrey Hepburn is a large part of that. She had tremendous style.  She had powerful grace.  She had a kind and joyful heart.  Her vulnerability made her strong.  Her compassion was her best feature.  Simply put, she is one of my heroes.

If you like her for her little black dresses and pixie haircut, take a few minutes and read up about the woman behind the icon.  Learn about her WWII hardships or her work with the resistance movement and how her wartime experiences led to her amazing lifelong affiliation with UNICEF.

But in the meantime, take a look at this super cool graphic offered to me through the generosity of outletshoppers.com.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

Happy birthday, Audrey.  You were a true gem.

2014 Oscar Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

I’m back!  I had so much fun doing my middle aged mom commentary for the Golden Globes, I’m back for the Oscars, which is basically the Golden Globes for a select few 63 year old white men, something they like to call “The Academy.”  Pffft.  Even old white men like to see pretty ladies all gussied up.

This was a safe year for Oscar fashion.  I think the most risque thing was seeing Liza Minelli without a bra and Pharell Williams in short pants.  The trends were nudes (so many of the starlets looked like they were coming off a college art modeling class), bedazzled frocks, and dark lips.  Some of it worked, some of it didn’t — at least from this middle aged mom’s point of view.

So here goes, without further delay, my picks for the hits, the misses, the meh, and a few men thrown in for good measure.  Enjoy!

And if you like it, share this sucker.
